The Novo Group is a family of independent companies with a common history and shared values. All Novo Group companies share and benefit from the governance principles stated in the Novo Group Charter, including the Novo Way of Management.
The Novo Nordisk Foundation is a self-governing and profit-making foundation. Its objectives are to provide a stable basis for the commercial and research activities undertaken by the companies in the Novo Group and support scientific, humanitarian and social purposes. The majority of the grants goes to medical and scientific projects as well as to other selected research areas. Among the Foundation's grants are 'The Hallas Møller Scholarship', 'The Novo Nordisk Prize' and funding of the 'STAR project', a programme that aims at increasing knowledge about diabetes care in developing countries. The Novo Nordisk Foundation in 2007 donated DKK 600 million for ‘The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research’ to be established at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. Furthermore, in early 2010, the Novo Nordisk Foundation donated DKK 885 million for the establishment of ‘The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’ a new international research centre also at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
Novo A/S, the holding company in the Novo Group, was established prior to the demerger of Novo Nordisk in 2000. Novo A/S is a private limited liability company wholly owned by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, and the company's purpose is to manage the Foundation's funds. Besides being the majority shareholder in Novozymes A/S and Novo Nordisk A/S, Novo A/S provides seed, venture and growth equity capital to development stage companies with pioneering scientific ideas within life science.
